Within the framework of the project “WAGER – Winning Against Geological Risks in the Peaceful Caucasus,” an international summer school was held at Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University.
The summer school brought together Master’s and Doctoral students from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy), Ilia State University, and Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University.
The project focuses on the study of one of the most serious natural hazards in the Caucasus region — landslides. The nature of landslide processes in the Caucasus and the Alps exhibits significant similarities.
The main goal of the project is to adapt and introduce in Georgia the modern research and monitoring methods and technologies that have been developed in recent years for studying landslide processes in the Alps. The Polytechnic University of Turin is one of the leading institutions in this field.
On the first day of the summer school, professors and doctoral students from the Polytechnic University of Turin and Ilia State University delivered presentations.
During the second and third days, participants conducted a detailed field study of a pre-selected landslide area in Kistauri, Akhmeta Municipality, using advanced aerial and remote sensing methods.
At Telavi State University’s Computer Centre, participants performed process modelling using specialised software mock-ups and assessed the latest elements of landslide hazards and risk.
At the conclusion of the summer school, participants reviewed and summarised the research results obtained during the programme.
The “WAGER – Winning Against Geological Risks in the Peaceful Caucasus” project is funded by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (NATO SPS) and is being implemented from 2024 to 2027.
Scholarships are provided for students involved in the project to support their scientific research activities.
